When one knowingly commits a sinful act, large or small, one experiences a feeling of emptiness and guilt, then a longing to get back into close fellowship with God through confession and repentance asking for His forgiving grace. I have had this experience many times in my Christian walk. When things are really bad and I am feeling depressed from the guilt of having sinned openly. I always prayerfully read through Psalm 51, and with David I pray for restoration to my previous spiritual state. A pastor once remarked,"keep short accounts with God!" I am told in scripture that, "The blood of Jesus Christ , cleanseth us from all sin." When I was saved by accepting Christ as my Lord and Saviour, all my sins, past, present and future were totally forgiven.
Jesus commented that "He that is cleansed has no need to be washed save his feet."
I think this means that during our daily walk we are going to sin, because by nature we are sinners. Therefore the sins we commit daily need to be cleansed daily, when we have a quiet time with the Lord on a daily basis we can obtain this cleansing through prayer and meditation. We are are admonished to, "Grieve not the Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed to the Day of redemption."
Sin separates us from our 'communion in the Spirit' with God, and through His spirit within, He lets us know in no uncertain terms when we have stepped out of line. I think then this 'longing for God' kicks in and won't be satisfied until we have confessed all our sins and been restored to fellowship with Him in the spirit. This has been my practice for more than 50 years, Jesus Christ is more real to me today than ever because I believe His promises passionately, when He says "I will NEVER leave you or forsake you." I believe it, and by keeping it simple like this I have survived many obstacles and periods of depression.
